On April 12, 2013, at 8:30 in the morning we lost Mickey. Technically he was not gone; he was sitting right next to me. We knew something was wrong but assumed there was a way to fix whatever it was. The neurologist that I was meeting for the first time had just told us, after extensive testing, the diagnosis was Early Onset Alzheimer’s. Mickey was one week shy of his 56th birthday. He was in excellent health. We exercised, ate right, went to the doctor for physicals regularly. I was misinformed as many people are that Alzheimer’s is for people in their golden years. As usual, Mickey was more concerned about me and the kids, than he was for himself. We have always been resilient and fighters and we would just fight through this, he said. Over 2 years later, we have learned from research that you can’t fight a disease that has no cure. You can slow the progress but not the inevitable.
For our family, the Alzheimer’s Association has provided us with valuable information, much needed support and friendship and an adversary in this fight. The Association has given us the courage to continue to fight for Mickey, others we have met with this disease and for those still
undiagnosed. Mickey has always enjoyed golf and it remains something he loves to do with his family and friends. Therefore, it seemed logical when our children suggested a golf tournament
that this would be the way we could fight back, and Mickey could fight with us. Our first tournament in May of 2015 was a great success. In spite of the reason we were all there, it was a wonderful day of laughter, some tears and a celebration of life. Together, we raised over
$20,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association and had a blast doing it, in true Mickey style. We are so grateful for all who contributed, played and supported out efforts...
